Considerations for Architects, Interior Designers, and Engineers
In today’s drywall construction the only difference from low-end to high-end is the overall appearance. All drywall only has a 15 year lifespan. It’s about time high-end projects spec in much higher quality materials that can be used the same as drywall but increase the durability lifespan by 4 or 5 times.
Customizing the system to construct and finish your substrates to increase the lifespan, durability, and level of finish to meet the desired level of finish I call “The Living Wall” that lives the life it was intended to.
Standard drywall systems by the manufacturers state that after 15 years drywall will start showing deflection (waving of the substrate), filling compounds are very soft and not very durable or impact resistant.
- In the industry we have been lead to believe that drywall is the only substrate available, this is absolutely not true. There is a board like drywall called veneer plaster board which is much higher quality than drywall, and has a lifespan 4-5 times as long.
- Drywall filling compounds range from soft to very soft and are not impact, moisture, or abrasion resistant,
- Base coat plaster filling compounds are water resistant, very hard, and can be used to accomplish all levels of finishing the same as drywall compounds.
- Some plaster base coat materials can be used directly over concrete substrates and can be polished to a smooth finish and can be painted
- Plaster base coat compounds are highly recommended as a base for high end finishing due to being very hard.
- Substrates can be constructed from rib-lathe or expanded metal and can be scratch and brown coated with gypsum or cement plaster then finished to any finish desired, highly recommended for venetian plaster.
- All types of corner bead and trims can be custom ordered to meet your needs.
- Cement plaster finishes can be used in high moisture areas
THE LIVING WALL SYSTEM.
To upgrade the level of your substrate to be more resistant against moisture, impacts, and sagging and have a lifespan of 50 to 100 years without failure.
i.e. plaster base (board) 5/8″ and 1/2″ sheets 4’x8′ and 4’x12′
screw spacing must be 7″ apart maximum, around the sheet perimeters for ceilings and 8″ apart for walls. 3 screws in the field on ceilings, 2 screws on walls.
All gaps are to be pre-filled before taping and filling on beadwork.
Inspect with supervisor and take photos and sign off that all work has ben completed before moving forward.
This will ensure that the foundation for your substrates will not fail.
Areas that are to be level 6 are to be rod and feather edged to achieve a straight and flat surface. Must be achieved with a setting type compound first then finished with a setting type compound to achieve a hard, impact resistant substrate.
Areas with setting type compound as a base coat will properly support an impact and scratch resistant finish such as venetian plaster or veneer plaster.
VENEER PLASTER SYSTEMS
Veneer Plaster Finished one and two coat system’s Economical wall and ceiling finish adds colour without painting. UV and abrasion resistant, easy to maintain, washable surface semi smooth or variety of textured finishes unlimited colour choice, non-shrinking material, highly recommended for venetian plaster base.
The highest level of level of substrate, wire lathe and plasters gypsum plaster base and/or cement plaster base. the highest impact and abrasion resistant base water resistant and/or water proof.
This will provide a substrate that will feel like marble and give the highest impact and scratch resistance available.
